Open-world action-RPG

Atomic Heart is an action game developed by the Russian studio Mundfish. This game throws players into a mysterious world full of technological advancements. Here, you will play as a KGB officer sent to investigate why a robotic research facility has gone dark.

At first glance, it looks as if Atomic Heart took everything good from Fallout, BioShock, and Metro and mixed them up. With this, fans will see a few similarities, including the retro-futuristic aesthetic and post-apocalyptic, dystopian atmosphere. If you are a fan of the mentioned games, you will feel right at home here.

Fight the technological revolution

Atomic Heart is a first-person shooting game with action-role playing elements. As noted, it is set in an alternate universe where the Soviet Union experienced a technological revolution with robots, the internet, and holograms. Here, you play as a Special Duty KGB officer. Your task is to investigate Facility 3826, a government facility full of malfunctioning robots, and find the reason that caused the chaotic event.

The game is an open-world game with a vast map encompassing mountains, plains, lakes, and more. Facility 3826 itself is spread out over the map with different areas for you to tackle. You can play the game solo. However, a railway can take you to a secret region meant for PvP battles. Take note that games of this caliber require high-performing PCs with large storage space.

With a trusty and handy companion

Accompanying you on your high-stakes adventure is Charles, an intelligent system embedded in your glove. It is capable of a handful of abilities that put an interesting spin on the general gameplay, such as switching on a more detailed view of your surroundings, firing off ice or electric bolts, maneuvering enemies without having to touch them, and activating a shield, among others.

Overall, the gameplay consists primarily of fighting various forms of malfunctioning robots. However, darker enemies are lurking around every corner. More than shooting, the combat of the game also involves melee combat. There is also a crafting system in place. Players can create improvised weapons. The materials used for crafting weapons are metal parts detached from robots and household appliances. Note, however, that ammo in the game is scarce.

A fun yet creepy adventure

In general, Atomic Heart offers a unique and creepy adventure into what could have been a golden era for the Soviet Union. There is more than what meets the eye in this game, as everything you could meet here are enemies. Even the facility you are exploring is designed against you. However, the Russian sci-fi romp that this game offers may not be for everyone since it can be quite graphic.
